It's been ages since I've written anything! I've been focussing on being a primary school Art teacher and haven't made enough time for MY art. After travelling over 1200km in just over a day to see a painting I collabrated on, it's time now to shift things.
Last year, (which seems like a life time ago!) I participated in the Wirrigirri program with the Dept of Health. Wirrigirri is the Wurundjeri word for messenger. The purpose of being a Wirrigirri was to promote Reconciliation with your colleagues. I teamed up with a fellow artist who also worked at the Dept to create a painting to promote Reconciliation. After finding 2 willing Aboriginal ladies (artists in their own right,) hours of planning and many hours of painting, 'The Messenger (Wirrigirri ) Tree' was born.
'The Messenger Tree' has now found it's home at Mildura Base Hospital in their foyer. When the Healing Centre is built, it will then live there.
I was fortunate enough to be able to travel the distance to be at the official unveiling of 'The Messenger Tree.' It blew my mind to see it on the wall in the foyer. I felt humbled when I heard that our painting spoke to Belinda, the lovely lady that put her hand up for the painting as was chosen. Like it was meant to be. Belinda also mentioned that a few people told her The Messenger Tree speaks to them each morning when they walk past it. Brings tears to my eyes.
Anyway.... please watch this video that shows the journey and meaning behind The Messenger (Wirrigirri) Tree. Would love to hear what you think. If you're up near Mildura anytime, drop in and check out our artwork.
Off to paint now in my new studio (a wonderful space in my garage!) Pictures to follow soon..
Keep smiling :-)
